Outdoor benches can serve a variety of purposes. Primarily they offer a comfortable, relaxing place to sit down. They are often most appreciated by the elderly, infirm or disabled, but also those with young children or others having a picnic or sandwich in their lunch break.
Benches have long been a preferred option for seating in schools, many churches and other communal areas. However they only started to become more popular in the Victorian era with the advent of public works and philanthropy.
PARK BENCHES
The garden city movement led to the development of towns with larger public parks to allow the general population to relax and enjoy nature. Park benches provided an ideal method to allow a number, typically up to 4 per bench, to sit, take in the surroundings, perhaps talk with friends or strangers, have a picnic or a drink, or perhaps just rest before continuing a walk.
SCHOOL BENCHES
Schools changed the way they used benches during this period as well, moving from using them indoors to outdoors. Now school benches are available in playgrounds and playing fields. Often schools will have a garden area, tended by the children, and an outdoor bench is often available in these areas.
OPTIONS
The benches Neptune offers vary in the use of materials and design.
The Cerro bench has a stunning, eye catching design, with the aluminium supports and angled arm rests. Modern developments, financial or design orientated institutions and prominent modern or historic urban locations, all lend themselves to its use. Secure stainless steel fixings are used throughout.
The Avenue cast iron bench also looks great and can be used in the same sorts of places. A traditional black colour can look stunning. However other colours may prove more suitable and dark green, dark blue, burgundy, red, yellow and grey are available as well.
We also offer a variety of more traditional wooden outdoor benches. The Beaufort and Kara benches have galvanised steel supports and the Neptune has concrete supports. All have thick hardwood slats that are hard wearing and durable. The wood can either be stained or left to weather naturally. Pressure treated softwood is an alternative option. A choice of several colours for the steel and cast iron supports is generally available.
Hot-dip galvanised steel protects against corrosion. Powder coating means a range of colours are available. Cast iron is typically coated with a high quality rust inhibitor with black or green being the most popular colours.
Concrete supports are offered with a good looking exposed aggregate finish.
Park benches are generally available with options which allow for fixing above ground or below ground, on a variety of surfaces from grassed and uneven ones to hard surfaces. |
